Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Doveton lawn

  • Beside Dandenong Creek or Eumemmerring Creek, say if the back lawn stays soft after rain. Better planned for than found on the day.
  • Near Myuna Farm, say whether a gum drops bark and leaf on the lawn. That is a blow-down before the cut.
  • Measure the Commission-era side gate. A gate narrower than 70 cm rules out everything but a push mower; 70-95 cm takes the standard machine.

Doveton lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Doveton?+

A 180 m² Doveton lawn runs $100-$145 per mow in our model. The bid is worked from the aerial of the block in question, so a 1950s lot with lawn front and back lands above the guide.

Who mows the nature strip in Doveton?+

The household does. Casey owns the land but says an urban strip is the owner's or occupier's to keep, publishes no grass height, and deals with overgrown grass under its Community Local Law 2025. List the strip and it goes in the same visit.

Are Doveton lawns old or new?+

Old, mostly. The housing is State Housing Commission work from the mid-1950s, 1,500 homes by 1962, so most lawns are long established rather than new turf. An established lawn can be cut lower than a young one, but the mower still leaves two-thirds of the blade standing after any one cut.

About Doveton

The land was part of the Eumemmerring run in the 1830s, then the Grassmere estate, cut into small farms in the 1880s with a hotel, a school and a racecourse. The name arrived around 1954, after Captain Francis Crossman Doveton, a goldfields commissioner and police magistrate who had lived here until about 1903. A lace factory opened on the Princes Highway in 1950, and International Harvester, General Motors-Holden and Heinz built on the south side of the highway. The first Commission houses went up around the Autumn Place shops; the post office opened on 1 December 1956 and seven schools were open by 1969, and by 2011 the State schools were down to one, on the 1956 primary site, now Doveton College.

The suburb is 3.9 square kilometres bounded by Dandenong Creek and Power Road on the west, the Monash Freeway to the north, Eumemmerring Creek to the east and the Princes Highway on the south; the Mulgrave Freeway split off Doveton North in 1972 and the land south-east of Eumemmerring Creek became Eumemmerring in 1981. Both creeks carry linear recreation spaces, and Myuna Farm has sat on Dandenong Creek since 1982 with a wetland of boardwalks and remnant red gums. There are six ovals and the Dandenong Workers golf course. A lawn on a Commission block has had up to seventy years of mowing behind it: tell the mower what it has become, whether it is level, and what the street tree drops.

Doveton is City of Casey. The nature strip along Power Road and every other street is council land, but Casey says an urban strip is for the property owner or occupier to manage; no grass-height figure is published, and overgrown grass has been a Community Local Law 2025 matter since 2 March 2026. Council crews prune the street trees once every three years. The green-lid bin is for food scraps and garden waste, is emptied fortnightly, and every residential property has it by 2026.
