Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Keysborough lawn

  • Name your estate. Somerfield or Elmswood turf is a different job from a 1970s lawn near Parkmore, and turf laid in the last two summers is cut at 60-70 mm.
  • The former swamp areas have sandy soil. Say if your lawn dries out fast in summer so the cut height suits it.
  • The green bin is fortnightly. If a fortnight's clippings won't fit, say whether the mower should mulch or take them.

Keysborough lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Keysborough?+

In our model a 180 m² Keysborough lawn is $100-$145 per visit. Bids come off the measured area of your own block, whether it is an estate lot in the south or a 1960s-90s block in the north.

What are the nature strip rules in Keysborough?+

Greater Dandenong's: the resident maintains the strip regularly, the council recommends grass no higher than 100 mm and mows only where there is a safety risk. The tree on the strip is the council's. The suburb is wholly Greater Dandenong, not Kingston, so Kingston's rules do not apply.

How old is a Keysborough lawn?+

It goes by the estate. North of the 2000s industrial belt the streets date from the 1960s to the 1990s; south of it are The Keys, Hidden Grove and Crystal Waters from 2002, then Elmswood and Somerfield from 2017. Turf laid in the last two summers is cut at 60-70 mm.

About Keysborough

The Carrum Swamp was drained for farms between 1878 and the 1920s, and Keysborough ran on dairying, grazing and market gardens, growing wartime vegetables for the Dingley cannery. A golf club moved here from Albert Park in 1952. Houses came from 1973-75: Parkmore shopping centre in 1973, Chandler Park Primary in 1970, Chandler High in 1972 and the Catholic primary in 1974. The post office opened as Noble Park South in 1973 and was renamed Keysborough in 1978. Only 345 people lived here in 1947; there were 19,885 in 2011.

The suburb comes in three parts. The north was built from the 1960s to the 1990s; the middle went residential and industrial from the 2000s; the south is estates, The Keys, Hidden Grove and Crystal Waters from 2002, then Elmswood and Somerfield from 2017. The former swamp areas have sandy soil. The boundaries are Springvale Road on the west, Dandenong Creek and EastLink on the east, and Pillars Road and Mordialloc Creek on the south, 21.8 square kilometres in all. A lawn's age here follows its estate.

Keysborough is wholly City of Greater Dandenong. Residents maintain the nature strip regularly, the council recommends grass no higher than 100 mm, and it mows or waters a strip only for a public-safety risk; unsightly properties get a compliance notice and the council can do the work at the owner's cost. Street trees are pruned by the council on a two-year cycle and residents may not plant, prune or remove one. The green-lid 240 L food and garden organics bin is fortnightly, $121 a year for the garden component in the standard options.
