About Noble Park
Until after the Second World War the district was market gardens, dairying and poultry, and the Railways Department ran a poultry farm and later a plant nursery here from the early 1920s. Noble Park split from Dandenong Shire in May 1955, a city from 1961, and the schools that opened between 1955 and 1979 track the housing as it spread. The population was 1,507 in 1933 and 30,869 in 1996. Even the name is contested: accounts differ on whether it was Buckley's Nobel Park, after Alfred Nobel, worn down to Noble, or his son Noble Buckley, with the other children on the street signs.
The soil is fertile, with numerous river red gums, a legacy of the market-garden era. A lawn under a red gum is a different job from one in the open, so say if you have one. Strip shops flank the station, Ross Reserve has the pool, and the suburb covers 12.4 square kilometres of streets built out over the post-war decades.
