About Williamstown
A convict-built stone jetty went in during 1838, the same year the ferry Fire Fly started running to Melbourne. The time ball tower was erected in 1852, Australia's first telegraph line ran from here to Melbourne in 1854, and the railway opened in 1859. Borough status came in 1856; the botanic gardens, the mechanics' institute and a post office all date from 1860. Williamstown Grammar opened in 1867 and the high school in 1915.
Work here was on the water. The railway workshops sat at Point Gellibrand from 1857 to 1889, shipbuilding started in 1913, and the naval dockyard, the wool and textile mills and the 1916 wheat handling followed. Port Phillip and Hobsons Bay bound the suburb on several sides. Williamstown Pier station opened on 8 January 1905. The Merrett Rifle Range held the 1956 Olympic shooting, and road access over the West Gate Bridge was completed in 1978.
