Lawn mowing in Harkness
Harkness got its name by gazettal on 9 February 2017, effective 23 August that year, from land that was mostly Melton West with a small piece of Toolern Vale. The name is William Scott Harkness's: born in Roxburghshire in 1839, he reached Port Phillip in 1852, managed Strathtulloh and farmed here until his death in 1908.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Harkness lawn
- If the house predates 2017 say so; the lawn is established and the mower sets a normal height.
- Arnolds Creek blocks: tell the mower whether the rear lawn slopes and whether the fence is open to the reserve.
- Give the side gate width in centimetres, not 'standard'; under 70 cm changes the machine.
Harkness lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Harkness?+
The Harkness guide for 180 m² is $100-$145 on a regular round. A mower prices from the aerial outline of your own lawn and adds the strip if you list it; a young lawn cut high is usually a quicker job than an older one.
Does the council mow the nature strip in Harkness?+
No. Melton's local law makes it the resident's: mowing and weeding on a regular basis, litter, soil top-ups, a level surface, and the council's own crews mow and water none of it. Put the strip in your listing and the mower does it with the lawn.
How do I mow a Harkness lawn in its first summer?+
High and often. Instant turf laid on the plain is rooting through its first two summers, so keep the cut at 60-70 mm, take off no more than a third at a time, and do not scalp it in January.
About Harkness
Arnolds Creek runs through the suburb with reserves and shared-use paths along it. Arnolds Creek Reserve is the ground of Melton Central Football Club, and Navan Park has a lake. Arnolds Creek Primary School and its kindergarten opened in the mid-2010s, and the early-learning centres are Melton Early Learning Centre, Melton Montessori and Happy Feet. The 2021 census counted 12,463 people; before 2017 they were counted as Melton West, which had 14,171 in 2011.
Some streets here were built while the land was still counted as Melton West, and whether yours is one of them changes the mowing. An older lawn takes a normal height and a fortnightly round in spring; a lawn under two summers old is cut high and often. A block beside the creek reserves may slope to the water. Say when your turf went down and which way the lawn falls.
The council for Harkness is Melton. Its rule has the resident keeping the strip abutting their property mown, weeded, litter-free and level, no council mowing or watering happening on strips, and any planting other than grass going through a landscaping application. Damage from vehicles parked on the strip is the resident's problem too. Clippings go fortnightly into the green-lid FOGO bin, in the week recycling is not collected, without a separate charge.
