Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Melton South lawn
- A lawn from the first streets comes with fifty years of beds and edges. Ask for the edging quoted in the visit.
- Near the Toolern Creek Trail, say whether the rear boundary is fenced.
- A lawn that stops growing in winter wants a monthly tidy from June, fortnightly again from September.
Melton South lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Melton South?+
The model has $100-$145 for one visit to a 180 m² Melton South lawn. Bids come from the aerial trace of the block, and a block with lawn at the front and lawn at the back can measure above 180 m².
Who mows the nature strip in Melton South?+
The resident does. Melton's local law names mowing, weeds, litter, soil top-ups and a level surface as the resident's responsibility, and the council keeps its mowers and its water off strips.
Does a Melton South lawn need cutting through winter?+
Rarely. A lawn that has been in the ground since the 1970s all but stops through the cold months, so a monthly tidy from June is enough, with the fortnightly round starting again when growth returns in September.
About Melton South
A school opened at Melton Railway Station in 1911 and became Melton South in 1925, with a new building; the post office followed on 1 January 1917 in what was still a sparsely populated rural area. Suburban expansion began in the late 1960s, from 393 people in 1961 and 466 in 1966. A Catholic primary and the technical school came in 1979 and Victoria University's Melton campus on Wilson Road in 1987. The count reached 8,916 in 2011 and, after Cobblebank, Weir Views and Strathtulloh were cut off in 2017, 11,362 in 2021. The shops are on Exford Road and Station Road, and V/Line trains stop at Melton station.
The oldest streets date from the late 1960s and 1970s, on the basalt and alluvial plain, and a lawn from them is fifty years established, with whatever has been planted around it since. Toolern Creek runs along the east with the Toolern Creek Trail beside it, and Blackwood Drive Reserve, Melton South Oval and Mount Carberry are the reserves. Tabcorp Park racecourse of 2009 and the golf range are near. Established lawns here thicken through spring and slow through the cold months; a lawn re-laid within the past two summers is the exception and gets a high cut.
Melton South's council is Melton. The strip in front of the block is the resident's: mow it, weed it, keep it level, pick up the litter. Melton does no strip mowing or watering itself; anything beyond grass on it needs a landscaping application, and damage from parked vehicles is not repaired by the council. FOGO is the green-lid bin, emptied every other week, opposite the recycling, at no extra charge, and lawn clippings are on its accepted list.
