About Melton
Melton spread south in the 1970s and north in the 1980s, creating Kurunjang, and at the edges the streets run into semi-rural land. That produces work the inner suburbs do not have: lawns big enough that a push mower is the wrong tool, and properties where the line between a lawn and a paddock is a fair question. This is open volcanic country - Mount Cottrell and Mount Kororoit are the cones to the east - taking 500 to 700 millimetres of rain a year. Toolern Creek runs through Melton and Melton South and joins the Werribee River at Exford, below the reservoir, and the 1886 Melton Viaduct, 375 metres long and 38 metres high, stands at Brookfield to the south-west over Melton Reservoir.
