Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Melton West lawn
- A 1970s lawn is more edge than grass. Say how many beds and paths the mower has to trim around.
- Beside the Arnolds Creek linear park, say whether the lawn slopes to the fence.
- Harkness was cut from this suburb in 2017, so an older street directory may put you in the wrong place; give the current suburb and the nearest cross street.
Melton West lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Melton West?+
For 180 m² of lawn our Melton West guide runs from $100 up to $145 a visit. The quote you get is priced off the aerial of your own block; where there is lawn at both ends of the house the measured area can top the 180 m² figure.
Does Melton council look after nature strips in Melton West?+
No. The strip abutting a property is maintained by whoever lives there: mowing, weeding, litter, soil top-ups and levelling, all regular. The council does not mow strips, does not water them and will not repair one that cars have parked on.
How old are the lawns in Melton West?+
The oldest date from the early 1970s, when the primary school, the shopping centre and the specialist school opened within seven years of each other. Fifty summers on, those are established lawns with established edges, and a fortnightly round through spring keeps them in hand. Say roughly when your street was built.
About Melton West
Woodgrove, the 1973 shopping centre, now has over 150 stores. Catholic Regional College and a Catholic primary opened in 1980, Wedge Park Primary in 1982 and the post office on 1 September 1994; in 2013 sites were set aside for a regional cemetery and a third state primary. The population was 14,171 in 2011, then Harkness was cut from the suburb on 9 February 2017 and the 2021 census counted 8,784. Seven schools are here today, among them St Francis Catholic College, St Catherine of Siena, Wedge Park Primary and OneSchool Global.
Fifty years is long enough for turf to become a lawn in its own right, with beds and paths grown up around it, and on the original streets the mowing is edging as much as cutting; the count rose from 10,381 to 14,171 between 2006 and 2011, so plenty of lawns are younger than that. The Western Freeway is the southern boundary. The linear parks follow Arnolds Creek and its East Branch, and expansion is planned westward across Djerriwarrh Creek and north toward Toolern Vale. The district is basalt plain cut by creeks, and a block on the Arnolds Creek parks may fall toward the water; say which way yours drains.
Melton West is City of Melton. The nature strip abutting each property is kept by the resident, with regular mowing, weeding, litter pick-up and a level surface to avoid trips; Melton runs no mowing or watering program on strips, and a landscaping application has to go in before anything but grass is planted. A strip that parked vehicles have cut up stays cut up. The green-lid FOGO bin goes out fortnightly, the week recycling does not, with no charge beyond the rates, and takes grass clippings.
