Lawn mowing in Rockbank

Rockbank takes its name from the stone-strewn ground, which gave the district its dry-stone walls. William Yuille shipped sheep from Tasmania in 1837 and held the Rockbank run by 1846; it grew into the largest pastoral estate around Melton.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Rockbank lawn

  • Rocks close to the surface are the district's signature. Tell the mower where they are before the first cut.
  • An older block that runs on into a paddock is two jobs; say where the lawn stops.
  • Measure the gate. A standard mower needs 70 cm of opening; a wide deck needs 95.

Rockbank lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Rockbank?+

The Rockbank guide, $100-$145, assumes 180 m² of lawn. Where the grass runs on past that into a paddock, say where the lawn stops, because acreage is priced as a ride-on job rather than off the guide.

Is the nature strip council-maintained in Rockbank?+

No. Melton's position is that the resident keeps the strip outside their place mown, weeded, level and clear of litter, and the council touches neither mower nor hose on it. It also declines to repair a strip that vehicles have parked on.

Does red volcanic soil make a good lawn in Rockbank?+

It gave the district its reputation for wineries. What it does under a lawn depends on how many rocks were left in the top layer, so say where they are. On a newer block the thing to respect is the two summers instant turf takes to root: keep the cut high, 60-70 mm, and never let one pass take a third of the leaf.

About Rockbank

The land carries many large volcanic rocks, poor for crops, and the same rocks went into the paddock walls. Under them is a rich, red volcanic soil that gave the district a reputation for wineries; Victoria's annual Olive Festival is held here. The New Cambridge Common School of 12 October 1868 is Rockbank Primary School today, one of Victoria's oldest. Kororoit Creek runs through the suburb between the Western Freeway on the north and Greigs Road on the south, and Mount Cottrell is the highest point nearby. The 2021 census counted 2,583 people, up from 1,349 a decade earlier; the northern portion became Aintree in 2017.

So a Rockbank lawn is one of two things: an older block on rocky ground, or a lawn on a street built since the count was 1,349. Say which you have; under two summers old it wants the high cut. Rockbank is City of Melton, and Melton leaves the strip to the resident: mowing, weeding, keeping the litter off and the surface level. Mowing and watering it are not things the council does, and grass is all that can go on it without a landscaping application. Clippings go out in the FOGO bin, green lid, on the fortnight the recycling stays home, at no cost.
